In this tour through Greenwich Village and the East Village, we'll see how punk rock developed — from forebears like the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, Jobriath and Suicide, to it's commercial peak in the late 70's with Patti Smith, the Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, and Blondie. Special attention is paid to punk's deep but often-overlooked roots in the city's LGBTQ+ community. We'll also discuss the larger history of the East Village, how the neighborhood impacted the music that came out of it, and how that music in turn transformed the neighborhood for decades to come.
Destinations include:
- Where the Velvet Underground first met Andy Warhol and Nico
- Where classic album cover photos of the Ramones, the New York Dolls, and the Velvet Underground were taken
- The bar where the New York Dolls formed
- The record store where Patti Smith first met her bandmate Lenny Kaye
- Where the word "punk" was first applied to this music (it's not where you think)
- Pre-fame homes of members of the Ramones, Talking Heads, and Suicide
- The locations of legendary venues, including CBGB, the Mercer Arts Center, the Dom/Electric Circus, the Bottom Line, Cafe Bizarre, and Club 82
Other things to note
I highly suggest going to the bathroom before the tour! There's a public restroom in Washington Square Park.
