Short-term rental regulations

Anyone who hosts short-term stays for 10 or more days a year in Wisconsin must register for a tourist rooming house license from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer protection.

Payment

The total cost for a tourist rooming house license is $110 with a one-time $300 pre-inspection fee.

Renewals

You’ll need to renew your license annually by June 30 and pay a $110 fee. License dates extend from July 1 of one year through June 30 of the following year.

Taxes

Guests who book Airbnb listings that are located in the State of Wisconsin will pay the following taxes as part of their reservation:

Wisconsin imposes a sales tax of 5% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in Wisconsin.

There is a county tax of 0.5% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in certain counties.

Local Exposition Taxes are 3% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in Milwaukee County; Additional Room Tax: 7% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in the City of Milwaukee. Premier Resort Area Taxes are 0.5% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in the City of Rhinelander, Village of Ephraim, Village of Sister Bay, Village of Stockholm, City of Eagle River, and City of Bayfield; 1.25% of the listing price including any cleaning fees and guest fees for reservations 29 nights and shorter in the City of Wisconsin Dells and Village of Lake Delton.
